31 rules were listed in The Art of Courtly Love, a 12th-century book detailing the principles of upper-class love. “True love can have no place between husband and wife,” it proclaimed, showing that weddings were generally business arrangements between families, while romance occurred outside of marriage through discreet, covert meetings – the true predecessors of today’s dates.
