All men are Beavis and Butt-head

In my earlier post , I used the example of Beavis and Butt-head as an illustration of how men always overinfer women’s sexual interest in them. You may think that Beavis and Butt-head are buffoonish cartoon characters, and real men and boys don’t behave like them. Well, you’d be wrong, and I have a Federal class-action lawsuit to prove it.

Babies Don’t Like Foreigners

I’ve lived in Northern Ireland for a few years now and I still feel like a two-dimensional cartoon character. It seems all I have to do to conjure up images in peoples’ heads of George Bush, Britney Spears, and old episodes of Friends , is to open up my mouth and say a few lines with my stereotypically flat, Midwestern accent.

Why do we believe in God? II

Religion is a cultural universal. Humans in every known society practice some type of religion. So it’s tempting to believe that religiosity is part of evolved human nature, that humans are evolutionarily designed to be religious.

You can’t be happy, while your heart’s on the roam, you can’t be happy until you bring it home (The Brothers Four). Modern times are difficult for lovers—perhaps more so than in most previous eras. Two major reasons for this: there are hardly any constraints preventing leaving the current romantic framework and there are many tempting accessible alternatives to the current romantic relationship

"Torn between two lovers feeling like a fool, loving both of you is breaking all the rules" (Mary MacGregor). Empirical evidence clearly suggests that humans are capable of loving and having sex with more than one person at the same time. Indeed, most people I interviewed for the book, In the Name of Love: Romantic Ideology and its Victims, said that they can romantically love, and actually have loved, a few people at the same time.

The Tragedy of Missed Opportunity

There is a great tragedy in this world, and that is people who are legitimately attracted to each other not hooking up. I see it every day in bookstores, coffee shops and even supermarkets. Long looks over frozen bacon

Many people believe that forgiveness is necessary if we are to put the past behind us and move on. Twelve-step programs teach the philosophy that we should forgive others because they, like us, were doing the best they could at the time.

If you want to know what women have been up to, look at men’s genitals II: The penis

Another piece of physiological evidence of women’s promiscuity throughout evolutionary history is the precise shape of the human penis and what men do with it.           This discovery was made by Professor Gordon G. Gallup, Jr

French Women = Sexual Predators?

A recent article in the British Telegraph newspaper sports the following rather panic-stricken headline: French women ‘are the sexual predators now.’   Now, those quotation marks strongly suggest that someone is quoted in the article asserting that French women have become sexual predators — whatever that means. But a close reading reveals that no such quote appears. So what does the article say?

If you want to know what women have been up to, look at men’s genitals I: The testicles

In an earlier post , I explain how the institution of polygyny excludes some men from mating opportunities. As an astute reader notes, however, the mathematics of polygyny presented in the post assumes that women, whether in monogamous or polygynous marriage, remain “faithful” to their husbands and mate only with them. Evolutionary biologists know that this has not been the case

Why Identical Twins Fascinate Us – and the Case for Fraternals

Identical twins are intriguing, but most people cannot tell you why this is so. I have thought a great deal about this over the years that I have studied twins in my lab, interviewed them in their home or met them on the street

Recently, the online magazine Slate had a special issue devoted to sex. One of the articles, called Don’t Ask the Sexperts featured prominent sexperts talking about what still mystifies them about sex. If our model holds any water, we should be able to answer some of their doubt and questions in terms of what we’ve learned about prehistoric sexuality.
